Moving to Shopify: a practical migration and launch checklist

Protect product data, URL continuity and customer journeys during a Shopify migration.

A migration is more than a new storefront. It moves a catalogue, customer journeys and operational routines into a different system. Treat launch as an acceptance decision supported by tests, not simply the moment a new theme looks finished.

01

Inventory what must move

List products, variants, collections, media, pages and data that must be retained. Compare the source system with the destination before selecting an import method. Shopify's migration guidance should be checked for current limitations rather than assuming every record transfers unchanged.

02

Map important URLs

Prepare a list of existing pages that attract traffic or are linked from campaigns. Map each to the most relevant destination and plan redirects where needed. Avoid sending every old product link to the homepage: it loses the intent of the original visit.

03

Test a complete customer journey

Test navigation, search, product options and cart behaviour on desktop and mobile. Verify the configured delivery and payment journeys with an approved test process. Check confirmation messages and the team's order-handling workflow before announcing the change.

04

Plan the cutover and review

Agree on a launch window, a data-freeze policy and rollback responsibilities. After launch, inspect missing-page reports, key product pages, analytics events and customer questions. Keep the old URL map available so issues can be corrected with context.

05

Will a migration preserve every search ranking?

No platform migration can guarantee unchanged rankings. Careful URL mapping, usable pages and accurate metadata reduce avoidable disruption, but search visibility must be monitored after launch.
